The maternal component of the placenta is known as the decidual tissue. Oxygen and nutrients in the maternal blood in the intervillous spaces diffuse through the walls of the villi and enter the fetal capillaries.

Hemochorial placenta  a placenta, as in humans, in which maternal blood is in direct contact with the chorion. The hemochorial placenta bathes the fetal trophoblast in maternal blood by forming lacunae, or lakes, of the mother s blood that surround fetal tissue.
