The human population's significance is that a new mutation would come with advantages and disadvantages. The need for natural selection to select the only favourable mutations at the expense of the detrimental ones because the population with beneficial mutations is likely to survive better and give rise to new individuals as opposed to the detrimental effects of the mutation, which normally disadvantage the population
