Banding patterns of snails is an adaptation to camouflage to protect them from predators and harsh weather conditions.

The proportion of unbanded snails is higher in exposed habitat than in the thickets over the years. Banded snails were higher on shrubby shady habitats over the years.

Over the years, the long term average frequency of unbanded snails was higher in open habitat compared to in the thicket.

Over the years, higher proportion of unbanded snails were associated with hotter, sunnier summers.
