They act in two ways: positive and negative feedback. Glands have receptors for measuring some parameters in our body and depending on their activity glands produce different kinds of hormones, depending from their specialization and developmental determination. After synthesis, hormones distribute overall the body and binding their targets - hormone receptors (receptor tyrosine kinases, ions channels, enzyme associated receptors), which stimulate regulatory signalling pathway depending from the hormone class. These receptors can be nuclear (if hormone is hydrophobic) or may be intramembranous and lead to cytoplasmic reactions that will amplify nuclear factors and change expression profile of each target cell. With the summary of target group of cells or tissues - we see regulation result.
