2)Alkali earth metals dissociate into atoms when exposed to flame.Some of the group II metals are exceedingly excited at higher levels but unstable which causes them to emit radiations on returning to the ground state.The radiations are concentrated in the visible space of the spectrum.For specific wavelengths, the intensity of the emission is directly proportional to the number of returning atoms while light produced is proportional to the concentration of the sample.
