Interstitial fluid is one of the body fluids. It is made up of a mainly water in which are dissolved and or suspended sugars, salts (e.g.calcium, magnesium, potassium) , fatty acids, amino acids, coenzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, white blood cells and nitrogenous wastes.
Laboratory preparation of body fluids (including Interstitial fluid) is possible and has been utilized in the first line evaluation of biomedical devices such as biosensors, catheters, biomaterials, etc.
Artificial and/or synthetic body fluids (such as Interstitial fluid) are widely used in biomedical engineering, as they are often the first medium within which biomedical devices are tested. Devices such as bioanalytical biosensors, catheters, s tents and bioanalytical protocols such as ELISAs are often developed and first tested in synthetic body fluids to evaluate matrix effects and determine long-term performance and stability
