Histology is the study of the structure and functioning of body tissues. To diagnose and treat certain diseases requires the knowledge of of the appearance, structure and general functioning of normal tissues. This helps to recognize, understand, treat disease, as well as design a treatment procedure.
Methods of histological examination of operated organs include; immunohistochemistry, antibody binding and electron microscopy. To study tissues using a microscopy requirews fixation (preservation) of the tissues before they are sectioned into thin sections by microtomy for observation. This process comprises of both physical and chemical techniques of killing the cells while retaining their characteristic shape and structure.
