Bacteria, despite their simplicity, contain a well-developed cell structure which is
responsible for some of their unique biological structures and pathogenicity. Many structural features are unique to bacteria and are not found in other types of cells like the eukaryotes. Discus in details the functions of porins and lipopolysaccharides found in
gram negative bacteri
Porins are involved in the passive transport of hydrophilic molecules across the bacterial membrane. As a result, porins provide the transportation of certain nutrients and substrates that maintain the metabolism of bacteria. .Lipopolysaccharides provide a permeability barrier that protects the cell from the entry of toxic molecules such (i.e., antibiotics and bile salts) that could disrupt the bacterial cell. These molecules provide a hydrophobic character that inhibits the attachment of hydrophilic molecules.
