Identify plant tissues found in roots, stems and leaves. What will happen if these tissues are damaged due to loss of soil nutrients, water and pests.
Each plant organ (roots, stems, leaves) contains all three tissue types: Dermal tissue covers and protects the plant, and controls gas exchange and water absorption (in roots).
Plants are also able to sense the injured tissue as an altered self and induce responses similar to those activated by pathogen infection. Endogenous molecules released from wounded tissue may act as Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs) that activate the plant innate immunity.
