3.2) Distinguish between:
i) Closed (chambered) and open (peristaltic) circulatory systems
ii) Pulmonary and Systemic circulatory systems
iii) Arterial and Venous blood circulatory systems
I) In closed circulatory systems, the heart pumps blood through vessels that are separate from the interstitial fluid of the body. In an open circulatory system, the blood is not enclosed in the blood vessels, but is pumped into a cavity called a hemocoel.
ii)Pulmonary circulation moves blood between the heart and the lungs. It transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. The oxygenated blood then flows back to the heart. Systemic circulation moves blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
iii) The vascular system, also called the circulatory system, is made up of the vessels that carry blood and lymph through the body. The arteries and veins carry blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body tissues and taking away tissue waste matter.
