Membrane biology refers to the study of biological and physicochemical aspects of membranes. All cells, present in a living organism, are bound by a cellular membrane that is selectively permeable. The cell membrane performs various functions like regulating material moving in and out of the cell; separating the inside of the cell from the extracellular environment; separating various organelles within the cell; providing a large surface area for certain chemical reactions to occur and as a site for specific cell identification markers to help differentiate between one type of cell from another.
