Important Quotation:
Explain:
1) who said it to whom, when and why, and
2) what does it mean, and
3) how does it apply to the lives of 21st century readers?
Quote 2: “I’m one of the innocents who could have spoken up and out when no one would listen to the ‘guilty,’ but I did not speak and thus became guilty myself.”
This shows Faber’s understanding of how numbers is more powerful as he was put into that position when books were being banned. Beatty and Faber both understand books as Beatty can use quotes correctly in a specific context and Faber can comprehend and teach the concepts to Montag. They also believe numbers are stronger than an individual as Beatty demonstrates this by referring to how the government is on their side. Faber indicates this when he talks about how there is no one to speak up with anymore. However, they have different perspectives on the cost of pain and pleasure. Faber believes pleasure is more costly due to no one realizing realities of life, whereas Beatty thinks pain costs more because he thinks the current state of society brings pleasure.
