A Kurdish national identity emerged around the beginning of the twentieth century, bearing strong ethnic roots. It is defined by a shared culture, language, territory, set of symbols, memory and experience, and future political aspirations. Most of these components of Kurdish national identity are deeply fragmented, due to both internal and external factors.1 Fragmented components of Kurdish identity, along with external oppression of the four states (i.e., Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria) have prevented Kurdish nationalists from achieving national emancipation, whether in the form of an independent Kurdistan or several autonomous smaller Kurdistans within the political boundaries of different states.
