Critically discuss the social, economic and environmental impact of consumerism
For some, consumerism in the modern world is becoming a kind of harmful addiction, causing stress and anxieties. For a person suffering from such an addiction, goods lose their own significance and become only a symbol of belonging to a certain social group. The idea of the possibility of achieving social superiority through consumption generates the belief that the very act of buying delivers more satisfaction than the actual product that is being purchased. Critics of consumerism believe that human happiness is made dependent on the level of consumption, consumption becomes the goal and meaning of life.
