About 105 years ago the City of Winnipeg started extracting fresh water from the lands of Shoal Lake 40, excavating the burial grounds and human remains. Later, the indigenous people did not have access to fresh water (while Winnipeg had) and they had to buy packed fresh water for quite a high cost during a 20-year period. The community in Shoal Lake 40 became separated from the mainland by a channel dredged by the City of Winnipeg.
