Their social structure is ranked into three groups: Highest class and the people that belong in this class include the Spaniards, peninsulares and the friars. Middle Class who comprised of the natives, mestizos and the criollos. Finally there was the lowest class which comprised of the Filipinos only. About political system, the Spaniards ruled the Filipinos in the 19th century. The Filipinos became the Spaniard’s slave. The Spaniards claimed their taxes and they worked under the power of the Spaniards.

Society in general appeared to be advancing when America gained control towards the end of the 19th century, making Spanish occupation redundant.

The growth of agricultural success also positively impacted Philippine society at this time, following a burst in manufacturing of coffee, hemp and sugar.

During this time, there was also a deepened sense of camaraderie in society due to the unanimous desire for independence. Through this, a clandestine group of activists called the Katipunan were formed, who were committed to reaching this goal. Their desire to eradicate Spanish influence in their country was also peaked by a rise in education at the time.
