Dante Alighieri in his writing of “Symbolism the Inferno” uses symbolism in his art, in fact it is an Allegorical work where everything is a symbol for something else. This paper discusses major instances where symbolism is used.

The Journey through hell, Here Dante is trying to find his path and stay on it, later on Virgil comes along to guide him find way to heaven where he is to meet his love Beatrice. This is a symbol showing how Dante moved away from sin to find God and Virgil is encouraging him to continue being virtuous.

Light and Dark. In this scenario darkness represents Hell whereas light represents Heaven and God. Dante sees much light in hell but without fire, which raises concern hence represents fear, sin and uncertainty, for this reason Virgil tells Dante that the path to heaven is dark at first.

The punishments. Each person is fairly sentenced and condemned to a punishment matching their sins on earth. This symbol tries to communicate with judicial bodies among us to be fair enough.
