Geological time has been divided into four eons: Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic.
- Hadean, being the oldest eon is marked from 4.6 billion years and describes the hellish conditions then prevailing on Earth: the planet had just formed and was still very hot owing to its recent accretion, the abundance of short-lived radioactive elements, and frequent collisions with other Solar System bodies.
- Archean eon lasted from 4 billion years to 2.5 billion years and is the eon when Earth’s crust had cooled enough to allow the formation of continents.
- Proterozoic eon describes the eon when early life existence took place and made Earth a habitable planet. It lasted from 2.5 billion years to 0.541 billion years.
- Phanerozoic Eon is the current geologic eon in the geological time scale. It was marked by the Cambrian period when the first hard shelled animals first appeared on Earth. All other eons are further classified as a super eon called pre-cambrian. Dinosaurs walked during this eon and the whole evolution of humans and technology comes under this eon.
