In an essay format, discuss what the purpose and function of schools are. With references
One of the functions of a school is to socialize children. This means that, in the society of their peers, children learn acceptable behaviour, reciprocal relationships, the norms of society, and appropriate conflict resolution. Schools also provide intellectual growth to learners by studying various disciplines. They help students identify their interests and abilities apart from supporting them in setting personal learning goals. Furthermore, schools facilitate student involvement and learning in decision-making regarding their own learning and the use of power and responsibility in the classroom and school. They create a culture of care and community where students learn to support one another and take responsibility for the well being of each other and the total community. Schools also teach students who are functioning at different levels of ability together in heterogeneous mixes. They assess student skills and learning styles to facilitate learning and promote personal excellence.
