Instruction:
Watch the movie Pleasantville (1998), an older classic about a young man, David, and his twin sister, Jennifer, who are sucked through their television into a 1950s black-and-white sitcom where it is always a pleasant 72 degrees, books have no words, and everyone accepts rigid conventional lives.
Q 1 What role, if any, do you see autonomy, knowledge, rationality, freedom, and choice playing in the movie?
Q 2 What do black and white indicate in the movie?
When utilized in film, black and white creates a virtually fanciful ambiance, a feeling of tone, and strong distinctions, as well as an almost surrealism vision of the universe. It has the ability to make a documentary feel both more authentic as in period-accurate movies and photography and otherworldly as in computer-generated graphics, real life is in color.
