Explain the concept of 'diversity' and indicate it's relevance to the South African Context
South African psychologists define 'diversity' as the ability to appreciate the difference. More specifically, respondents felt that difference should be valued and othering should be minimized. South Africa has nine distinct provinces and encompasses the nation of Lesotho, making for a diverse country to explore. Different languages are spoken across the nation from Zulu and Xhosa to Dutch, English, and Afrikaans, depending on the region. It raised awareness of the many thousands of Africans from many countries who live within our border, and for whom South Africa has become their home. Embracing cultural diversity is a particularly important topic in light of the xenophobic violence that has been prevalent in our country. South Africa has been famously referred to as the rainbow nation because it is made up of so many diverse cultures and religions. Contained within South Africa's borders are Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Tswana, Ndebele, Khoisan, Hindu, Muslim, and Afrikaner people to name but a few.
