Why study ancient philosophy?
We study ancient philosophy for the same reason we study contemporary philosophy that is to inquire into and consider issues of what it means to be human, the nature of morality, and other conceptual notions regarding the human condition. Ancient Greek philosophy was the attempt made by some ancient Greeks to make sense out of the world around them, and explain things in a non-religious way. Studying philosophy is great for many things that relate to our modern today questioning the ethics behind what it means to have “the good life,” gaining perspective and observing what similar philosophical “brick walls” we are run into today that the Greeks ran into back in the days of ancient Athens. These people, called philosophers, used their intelligence and reasoning skills instead of using myths to understand their world.
