You are approached by the Department of Labour to conduct a study to determine women farmers’ experiences in the agricultural sector, in the North-West province, South Africa. The sampling target is 20 research participants. A qualitative research approach is required. 1.1 Provide a critical discussion of the fundamental aspects (ontology and epistemology) of the applicable methodological approach. Also motivate why the approaches are relevant for your planned research. (10) 1.2 Indicate whether the nature of your research is descriptive and / or exploratory and / or explanatory and motivate your answer. (10) 1.3 Identify and discuss five distinctive characteristics of the research design. (5) Also provide relevant critique on the research design.
In my research, I will use the explanatory research methodology to establish the factors affecting women in farming, the current climate change, the process of preparation that in their point of view has led to good results in production. Again, I will discuss with them their weaknesses in farming, level of application of technology in agriculture.
I will evaluate the position of the male gender in the womens' efforts in farming. I again, investigate the effective marketing of the farm produce, the challenges the women face at the market. The ability of the women to expand their project and the ability to provide a solution to any loss suffered.
In my research, I will focus on providing a precise explanation of the solution to the problems faced by women in farming.
Characteristics of explanatory research design
1. It does not provide a conclusive result but provides insight on why and how a phenomenon occurred.
2. It helps to form theories and laws.
3. It uses basic and secondary research to find information.
4. It helps an individual to comprehend the topic or a subtopic of discussion.
Disadvantages of explanatory research design
1. Identifying the cause and impact among variables can be difficult to accomplish.
2. It is difficult to reach a pertinent conclusion.
3. Coincidences can be perceived as causes and effects of a phenomenon.
