Allow students to discuss their previous group work experiences and set some ground rules for successful teamwork. Using note cards, this discussion can be conducted in an anonymous manner.

Assign group tasks that promote participation, interdependence, and an equitable distribution of labor. Everyone in the group should take personal responsibility for their teammates' performance and understand that their own success is contingent on the group's success. Knowing that your peers are counting on you is a great motivator for group projects.
