Loose connective tissue
Loose Connective Tissue is also called areolar tissue located beneath the dermis later and underneath epithelial tissue of all body systems that contain external openings. It contains abundant ground substance plus thin and relatively few fibres and cells. Fibroblasts are its main cellular elements and some smaller amounts of adipocytes. Adipocytes play the role of facilitating gliding and act as interstitial filler.
Loose Connective Tissue has viscous, gel-like consistency which may fluctuate in the body due to variations in pH and temperature. This CT allows gliding between various muscles and organs and also in diffusion of gases, nutrients and metabolic wastes between cells and vessels that perfuse the tissue. Antigens and bacteria that have breached an epithelial surface are destroyed in this site.
