The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. The ones of carbohydrates are monosaccharides. The fats consist of glycerol and higher fat acids. The building blocks are called monomers. Their absorption occurs in the small intestine by the enterocytes of its villi. It can be performed by the passive transport like monosaccharides and active one like amino acids. The mechanism of lipid absorption is more complex. It includes emulsifacation, lipolysis, micellar formation, membrane translocation, intracellular resynthesis, chylomicron formation and lymphatic drainage.
