The genes Candida is comprised of over 200 species and constitutes an extremely diverse yeast species whose common bond is the absence of a sexual cycle. Only a few species cause disease in humans. Candida albicans is the second most frequent agent of human fungal infections worldwide, causing high-mortality rates.
