Select one complete poem you have studied or taught. The poem must not be longer than one page. The poem you select must be MUST be submitted as part of the assignment. Reference the poem following the correct Harvard referencing style. Demonstrate how you would use the three reading techniques you discuss in a) in order to help a typical EFAL learner at Foundation and Intermediate phase ‘read’ the poem you have chosen. Make clear why and how you would use each of the techniques you have chosen to help your chosen reader. Provide a clear explanation why the techniques you would use are suited to the poem you have chosen and the learners you would be assisting. Your response to b) must not exceed one typed page or 1.5 handwritten pages. Marks will be awarded for originality, practicality, and clarity of your response.
I would use the following reading skills in poem;
Skimming is a reading technique where you can glance over the material to find what you are looking for. This is best used when you already know the general idea of the text. You can also skim material before going for further reading.
Scanning is a reading method used when simply running your eyes over a text, usually to find what you are looking for, or to find anything that ‘pops’ out at you.
Active reading gives you a much more in-depth understanding of the text in front of you. This reading method should be used when you are reading something complex or something that you need to think critically about.
Detailed reading is the most labour-intensive and time-consuming reading technique. Readers carefully read, consume, and analyse each word for meaning. Piecing together the meanings of words in a sentence to provide a deeper understanding can take time and patience, but in some cases, this is the best technique to use.
