That night when Aksinov was lying on his bed and just beginning to doze, someone came quietly and sat down on his bed.
Semyonich bends over and whispers a plea for forgiveness. He confesses that it was he who killed the other merchant. He then planted the knife so that Aksionov would become the suspect. He falls to his knees and begs for forgiveness, promising to confess to the crimes so that Aksionov will go free. The old man replies that he has nowhere to go.
the sight of Semyonich's tears, Aksionov weeps himself. Aksionov tells him that God will forgive him, and that perhaps he himself is a hundred times worse. Having said this, Aksionov feels a lightness enter his body. He no longer had any desire to leave the prison, but only hoped for his last hour to come.
In spite of what Aksionov had said, Makar Semyonich confessed, his guilt. But when the order for his release came, Aksionov was already dead.
Aksionov’s wife told him that she had a bad dream. She dreamt that Aksionov had returned from the town with grey hair. But Aksionov was fair-haired. Grey hair is a symbol of bad omen. This was the importance of Aksionov’s wife’s dream.
