In a geology class, you were asked to determine minuscule pieces of rocks are magnetic or not. The problem is you don't have available magnets in the laboratory but a few copper wires and a power supply. How will you identify the magnetic property of rocks?

Answer

As we have copper wire and power supply we will make an electromagnet using these then we can test it. First of all take an iron nail then wound the copper wire on it. Now connect it to the power supply it will act as a magnet now you can detect the magnetic property of the rock.

Another way you can detect using the concept that current carrying conducting wire produces magnetic field. If the material comes within the vicinity of this field it will show deflection if it is a magnetic material.

Put the rock in matchbox wrap copper wire around it connect to power supply if the rock is a magnetic material it will show deflection otherwise there will be no deflection.
