For example, despite the fact that the South African economy has almost tripled over the past two decades, the poverty rate fell by only 8% between 1993 and 2014 (from 45% to 37%). In addition, South Africa is among the countries with the highest levels of inequality on the Ginny Index. Economic growth does not solve the problem of inequality, because the dividends are received not by the majority, but by the economic elite.
