Rotterdam is currently the second biggest municipality in the Netherlands. The early site of Rotterdam has a rich history that can be traced several years ago. The site had settlements near the Rotte estuary as early as 900 AD. The area was subdivided into fiefdoms and managed by vassals. The vassals erected their walls to control the recurrent floods that wreaked havoc to the community. However, the locality could still experience frequent overflows from the sea. The situation compelled various vassals to come together and build one huge dyke to protect the place from devastating waters. A dam was also constructed in the Rotte River to manage the flooding menace. The region was majorly a fishing village. The Count of the Netherlands later chartered the place into a town status in 1340.
