Socrates argues that the soul/self determines one’s quality of life. Therefore, it is critical to devote a considerable number of resources, energy, and attention to make the soul as beautiful and good as possible. Socrates believed that one’s inner self or soul has to come to a realization of what’s evil and good. As a result, one has to purge from evil and cultivate the good in self. In regards to social acceptance, pleasure, status, and wealth, one has to adopt the good things and reject all the greatest evils that cause pain and social rejection. He also argues that when individuals turn inwards in search of self-knowledge, true self may be discovered.
