A cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) is used to measure electrical signals, time intervals and phase shift between two electrical signals. There are CRO with electrostatic and magnetic deflection.
In the first case, vertical and gorizontal deflection plates are used. Cathode ray tube generates the electron beam, focuses it and accelerates it toward the fluorescent screen. The rest of the sections are electronic circuits which cause the desired movement of the luminous spot on the screen.
In the second case, magnetic lenses are used. The coils on which an electric current moves are called as thin magnetic lenses. It employs uniform magnetic field acting along the direction of motion of the electron beam. The path of the electron in a uniform magnetic field would be a helix if the electrons enter the field at an angle.
