California has the largest economy in the United States and it’s the 5th largest economy in the world. It’s the highest contributor to the federal government and yet many times it finds itself at odds with federal policies (those put forward by the federal government) involving a long list of issues such as the environment and immigration. Please discuss: what can we do as a state to influence federal policies to reflect more the politics of our state?

California can influence the policies of the federal government by trying out policies that might later have an effect on the entire nation. If California carried out policies within its territory that would indirectly affect the rest of the states, it would not be exceeding powers, since its policies would only apply directly to its territory. By this way therefore, it would influence federal policies, because the federal government should pay much attention to the matter since it would indirectly have an impact on several states.

California like any other state has its social obligation even though it is ranked the fifth in the United States economy hence is prone to challenges.  California specializes in the union policy, pension reform, spending reform, and school choice. The California legislature which comprises of two branches should come up with policy that goes hand in hand with that of the federal government. The environmental issues such as sea level rise, coastal flooding and coastal erosion should be fine tune in accordance with the federal government expectations in order to enable the state to remain relevant economically.

California as a State need also to look into its data privacy to ensure that its laws that are passed are not leaked out but consumes locally to boost its economy. California stands out, both for its willingness to adopt new ideas and for its influence over other states.  California has a long history of presenting Americans with alternative path hence it should remain to its main goal in order to influence the policies of the federal government.
