California has the largest economy in the United States and it’s the 5th largest economy in the world. It’s the highest contributor to the federal government and yet many times it finds itself at odds with federal policies (those put forward by the federal government) involving a long list of issues such as the environment and immigration. Please discuss: what can we do as a state to influence federal policies to reflect more the politics of our state?

The economy of the State of California is the largest in the United States, boasting a $3.2 trillion gross state product (GSP) as of 2019. If California were a sovereign nation (2019), it would rank as the world's fifth largest economy, ahead of India and behind Germany.

The foremost source of state law is the Constitution of California, which like other state constitutions derives its power and legitimacy from the sovereignty of the people. The California Constitution in turn is subordinate to the Constitution of the United States, which is the supreme law of the land.

The California Legislature has two branches, the State Assembly and the Senate. The Legislature vote on state laws and draft legislation.

The State of California has long played an outsized role in national politics for a number of reasons. An oft-mentioned phrase in national politics is “What starts in California often migrates to the rest of the country” or “what starts on the left coast moves to right to the rest of the country.” As such, how policy issues are addressed in California – by legislation, by regulation, or by judicial decision – often sets the standard for other states and the nation as a whole.
