The pandemic has also demonstrated how important it is to protect health workers in order to maintain a functional health system and society. COVID-19 has put health care workers and their families at risk at never-before-seen levels. COVID-19 infections among health workers are significantly higher than those among the general population, according to statistics from numerous countries across WHO regions.

Despite the fact that health workers make up less than 3% of the population in the vast majority of nations and less than 2% in practically all low- and middle-income countries, they account for roughly 14% of COVID-19 cases reported to WHO. In some nations, the percentage might reach as high as 35%. However, data quality and availability are restricted, making it impossible to determine whether health workers were infected at work or in the community. Thousands of health professionals have died as a result of COVID-19 infection around the world.

Aside from the physical dangers, the epidemic has put a tremendous amount of psychological strain on health workers who have to work in high-demand environments for extended periods of time, living in constant fear of disease exposure while being separated from their families and enduring social shame. Medical practitioners in all parts of the world were already at a heightened risk of suicide before COVID-19 hit.
