Explain how is the demographic feature of South Africa likely to affect development indicators in the country?
The demographic feature of a country or a given region provides data on several parameters such as population distribution and dependency rate. Demographics consist of statistical elements that influence the growth or decline of the population in a region. The main element captured in the demographic is level of income, employment, and education level.
In South Africa, the demographic feature is comprised of higher mortality as a result of HIV and AIDS. As the result, the country has experienced a low life expectancy, a decline in population growth rate. These result in a major implication in the labor market, due to higher death rates the labor supply is declining as most of the population in South Africa doesn’t live long.
Another indicator of development that is likely to be affected in South Africa is economic growth, the expected decline in population growth leading to low output will affect the economic growth of South Africa in the long-run of the economy.
