In 1957, Ghana gained political independence from British colonial rule and begun
the process of building a post-colonial Public Administration system. As Ghana
prepared for post-colonial rule, Governor Sir Charles Arden-Clarke made the
following important statement, ‘This is a critical time for the Gold Coast---- the Gold
Coast is about to make a great constitutional advance. The world --- is asking whether
the people of the Gold Coast have the capacity and the determination to shoulder their
new responsibilities and undertake the complex task of building up and carrying on a
good government under a new constitution’. What is Ghana’s answer to the world?
Discuss.
The people of Ghana since gaining their political Indepence were desirous of having major constitutional changes and are now more than ever determined to protect and adhere to it's constitution and in their preamble the have stated that the constitution is the supreme law of their land and the constitution is an institution important because it ensures that those who make decisions on behalf of the public fairly represent public opinion. Constitutions will provide for the division of powers between the central government and the regions. It will also ensure that the rights and freedom of people of gold coast are not interfered with.
