Substantive definition of family. this is based on blood, meaning shared genetic heritage and law, meaning social recognition and affirmation of the bond, these boundaries are clear this enables tracking of who is related to who over time. While as a theory, functionalism sees 'the family' as an institution constituting a basic building block of society, performing certain functions that must be fulfilled for social order to be possible and for society to continue. I would use the functionalist definition of family in research because the family performs several essential functions for society. It socializes children, it provides emotional and practical support for its members, it helps regulate sexual activity and sexual reproduction, and it provides its members with a social identity.
